The Crucifixion

The Crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ at Golgotha is solemnly commemorated on Holy Friday. In the icon of the Crucifixion, Christ is suspended on the Cross in the presence of His All-Holy Mother, who is comforted in her grief by the Myrrh-bearing women. On the opposite side, we see the young Apostle Saint John the Theologian, and the centurion (Saint Longinus) who pierced Christ's side with His spear before later confessing: "Truly this was the Son of God" (Matthew 27:54). A profound detail is the blood flowing from Christ’s feet onto a skull beneath the Cross. Golgotha means “Place of a Skull” (Matthew 27:33), and according to ancient Christian tradition, Christ was crucified at the very place where Adam was buried. The blood of Christ descending upon the skull of Adam therefore signifies the mystical cleansing and redemption of humanity, which since the fall had been held in bondage to sin and death.
