The Mystical Supper

Commemorated on Holy Thursday, the Mystical Supper depicts the final meal Christ shared with His disciples on the eve of His Passion, during which He instituted the Holy Eucharist . At the table with His disciples, the Savior identified Himself with the bread and wine, saying: “Take, eat; this is My Body... Drink from it, all of you. For this is My Blood of the new covenant” (Matthew 26:26–28). In the icon, Saint John the Theologian is depicted closest to the Lord, while Judas - the only figure without a halo - is shown reaching into the dish as Christ foretold: “He who dipped his hand with Me in the dish will betray Me” (Matthew 26:23). While this event is more commonly known in the West as the "Last Supper", the Orthodox Church instead refers to the Mystical Supper, for it reveals not simply Christ’s final meal before His Passion, but the eternal heavenly banquet to which the faithful are called.
